You can be a fan of 80’s music, and chuckle at the hairstyles and wardrobe from that decade, but if your bathroom is stuck in that time period, it’s anything but fun. Even if everything still works, chances are you’d like to update the room’s decor to this century’s style. And we’re happy to help you do just that! It’s a project we recently tackled for homeowners of a contemporary 80’s home in Mahwah.

A Renovation with a Total Transformation

In this bathroom trapped in the 1980’s, the homeowner was more than ready to have us completely gut it so that we could work with a fresh canvas.

We said goodbye to the old dark wood paneling that enveloped this room, making it appear smaller than it was. Originally, this bathroom was laid out in 2 rooms – the shower, jacuzzi and vanity in one room, and a separate room with the toilet. We discussed the challenges of the space and what the homeowners wanted in its place – layout, design choices, colors, and materials. Then we got to work!

The Prep Work

Our team demoed everything down to the studs. Then we framed the ceiling down, as well as framed in the shower, new doors, and small closet to the side of the shower. We installed all new plumbing and electric and insulated the exterior walls and ceiling with spray foam insulation. Once the walls had sheetrock, we could get to the stunning design features – tile, lighting, vanity, and fixtures.

Letting In the Light

The most noticeable change is how the room now appears so much lighter and brighter thanks to the new color scheme. The large white marble-look floor tiles help to visually lengthen the room and lead to sliding glass doors which open to the small second floor deck. Those existing doors and transom windows now help to shine a light on this gorgeous bathroom.

And when the sunlight is fading, the lighting we installed provides powerful light throughout the room. A beautiful and elegant simple halo hanging fixture is the center of attention. Ceiling recessed lighting and vanity lighting complete the look.

Modern Shower Experience

The new shower is the star of this bathroom oasis with its large size, gorgeous tile, fixtures, and smart technology create an incredible. The rainfall, wall mounted, andhand held shower heads allow for an amazing shower experience and allows for everyone in the household to enjoy their favorite way to shower. The showerhead controls are stacked vertically – a unique look that keeps to the streamlined design. A built-in bench in the same neutral tones as the shower wall and main wall, adds to the relaxing spa-like look of the shower. The sleek, black shower fixtures pop against the light tile and complement the sliding door frames. A small closet to the side of the shower keeps toiletries and fresh towels handy.

A Change in the Layout

Implementing a smarter use of space, the second room, which used to house the toilet, is now a handy closet.

Finishing off the room design opposite the shower is a spacious double sink vanity with two mirrors and vanity light. The vanity has spacious drawers for personal bathroom items. In their old bathroom, personal items were stuffed in plastic stacking bins under the sink, so we know our homeowners are loving this large vanity!
