How Long Do Bathroom Renovations Take

installing bathroom tileBefore you move forward on your bathroom renovation, there are plenty of things to keep in mind for planning purposes. First, if your soon to be renovated bathroom is the only one in the house that has a shower/bath, you’ll have to set a plan for your family to take their showers elsewhere. Another scenario to consider is inconvenience when it’s your bathroom in the master bedroom that will be unavailable for some time. Expect to plot well-lit alternate routes for middle of the night urgencies!

Secondly, as in any project, a time estimate is just that – an average amount of time based on past experience. If something happens to the supplies, materials, tools, or the workers themselves, you’ll want to manage your expectations and have alternate plans to fall back on.

Regardless of the time, the temporary disruption will be worth it, as your new bathroom will be as beautiful and functional as you imagined!

Average Length of Time for a Bathroom Renovation

A bathroom renovation usually takes 4 to 8 weeks to complete. This is a good estimate if everything goes according to plan and there are no delays or issues. Above average baths can take longer – maybe even one more month. The timing is based on the complexity of the project.

Do realize that any renovation involves several stages, with multiple factors at play.

  • During the demolition phase, it could take a couple of days, but expect a longer time period for bathrooms on the 2nd floor or if the waste takes a while to be removed. For projects where the tub and toilet will be removed, count on 2 more days.
  • The electrical may only take a day to run the lines but it can’t move forward until it passes the first round of inspection. Take into account how long your town building department will take to send an inspector for a walk through. You could be waiting a day or a week, and that is out of the builder’s control.
  • Other factors like drywall, tile and paint will rack up a few more days, especially waiting for drying time; but then expect more delays waiting for the second inspection.
  • Cabinetry, flooring, and fixtures will take 5 or 6 more days.

What Can You Do To Move Things Along

Delays can come from anywhere so make sure you’re aware of what is in your control.

  • Make as many decisions ahead of time as possible. In the middle of the project is not the best time to stop and decide on hardware, paint colors and tile designs. Have your color and materials choices ready to go, with backups in case your first choices are unavailable.
  • Be available and reachable throughout the project so that if your feedback is needed, the workers are not set back a half day here and there because you’re unavailable for decisions or discussion.
